EWSD COURSE QUESTIONS 

Q: What should students wear to class?

A: Students should wear long pants such as; sweat pants or workout pants. T-shirts and sweatshirts are acceptable. Knee and elbow pads are highly recommended to prevent injuries. Only tennis shoes, stocking feet or bare feet are allowed.

When wearing tennis shoes, the students must walk onto the training mats and be certain that their shoes will allow their feet to turn freely. If a student’s foot sticks to or grips the mats tightly, they must remove their shoes before participating in any class to prevent injury.

Q: Is prior experience or training required to attend a student course?
A: No, that’s our job. We teach those who have no experience.

Q: What level of conditioning is required to attend a student course?

A: That depends on what phase you plan to do. Almost anyone can do Phase One.

Q: How much does the course cost?

A: The course is free. A student training manual is available for $26.00 if you would like to purchase it.

Q: How long is the course?

A: One night a week for 4 weeks 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Q: Can mothers and daughters take the class together?

A: Certainly. That is something we encourage. Many see it as a good bonding experience. (age 15 and up)

Q: What is required to become an Equalizer instructor?

A: Anyone wanting to become an Equalizer Instructor must be a Certified Law Enforcement or Corrections Officer or an employee of Triad Martial Arts, Inc, which is the parent company of SSGT Defensive Tactics and The Equalizer Programs.

Q: Is this a Martial Art?

A: Almost all defensive tactics techniques have roots in the Martial Arts. The Equalizer has roots in the Martial Arts but it is not a “Martial Art.” There are no belts, no uniforms, and no tournaments. Our goal is escape and survival.

Q: How effective is this program?

A: The Equalizer is a Division of SSGT Defensive Tactics for Law Enforcement. The two programs consist of many of the same techniques. The techniques of SSGT are currently being taught to thousands of officers in various states and have been responsible for saving officers from severe injury and death. Our techniques have been proven to work when it counts. It is also important to remember that nothing is 100 percent effective and that the effectiveness of a technique depends on a number of things such as: Quality of the technique; the quality of the instruction; the effort of the participant; how much the participant is willing to practice; the physical conditioning of the participant; where the incident takes place, etc.

Q: What equipment should I bring to a course?

A: Mats will be provided when necessary, but it is recommended that you wear knee and elbow pads. Especially in Phases Three and Four. Also, you need to wear tennis shoes or practice in bare feet.

Q: What should I not bring to a course?

A: For safety purposes, do not wear hard sole shoes, earrings, watches, bracelets, necklaces, large rings, hair pins, hair oils, long fingernails or heavy perfume.

Q: I heard fighting back against an attacker will just make things worse. Is that true?
A: The fact is, women who fight back have no greater risk of injury than women who comply.
