WILLIAMSON COUNTY APPROVES ARPA FUNDS TO PURCHASE AED UNITS
The Williamson County Commission approved a grant of nearly $50,000 of ARPA funds to purchase 28 new Lifepack AED units and CPR rescue kits as part of an order for 38 total units for the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department (WCPR) to place in local recreation facilities and parks. WCPR now has 54 units in recreation locations throughout Williamson County, and this order assisted in the replacement of 34 discontinued units.
Williamson County Parks and Recreation has supplied AED units and CPR kits in recreation facilities and parks for over two decades and regularly trains staff utilizing The American Red Cross Blended Learning Training programs for Lifeguarding and First Aid/CPR/AED and Basic Life Support to assist staff in preparing for and responding to emergency situations. Department Director Gordon Hampton said, “Over the years we have seen and experienced just how successful AED devices can be in helping to save lives, which is why we want to make sure they are available in our facilities; and our staff are properly trained in their use.”
An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It is a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, advise a respondent to deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. WCPR Facilities Superintendent, Frank Hubbuch, said, “We are so grateful to the county commission for granting us access to these funds to purchase additional AED units. They are a key component for us in providing safe recreation opportunities in our community.”
We purchased 78 units plus cabinets and extra accessories for the AED at a cost of almost $145,000 ($144,912) using our ARPA grant funds.Units were placed in vehicles that move around the county such as maintenance and the solid waste trucks.
