What do poll officials do?
Signing Up
Complete the one page application and mail or hand-deliver it to our office.
Appointment
Poll officials are appointed by the Election Commission no more than ninety (90) days prior to Election Day. A letter of appointment is sent to the poll official and a response is required by law. Poll Officials are compensated for their work unless they choose to waive their compensation.
Training
New Poll Officials are required to attend training. Training classes are conducted usually no more than forty (40) days prior to Election Day and are held on a day and time set by the Election Commission.
Polling Place Assignments
Appointed poll officials must appear at your assigned polling place at the specified time. The Officer of Election dismisses the poll officials at the precinct at the appropriate time when duties are completed. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.
Compensation
Poll Officials are compensated for their work on Election Day and for their Training Class.
It is around $125.00 with additional pay for training. However, a poll official may choose to waive their compensation. This would apply to individuals who may have been included in the Tennessee Achieves education program.
